A dental implant is a substitute root replacement, for a tooth. They can be inserted into the gum on their own. They can also be inserted as a group of dental implants.
Why would you need a dental implant?
A dental implant would be recommended to someone who has lost a tooth in their mouth. You can also replace damaged teeth with an implanted tooth.
Some dentists might recommend a dental implant in place of larger gaps in your teeth. This would protect against jaw shrinking, which has been know to change certain peoples jaw usage, and appearance.
Most people can happily get teeth implants. Ideally, a professional dentist will need to advise you on getting one or not.
What are dental implants made of?
The implants are made from materials such as porcelain. This can comfortably be used for chewing and speaking, and other wear and tear – just like a natural tooth.
The porcelain is attached to a stainless titanium pin, which is then inserted into the bone via the gums. This keeps the implant secure in the patients mouth.
This also has the added bonus of having the tooth feeling as natural as possible. This is opposed to other solutions like dentures, which can become unstuck and be taken out of the mouth, while chewing etc.
Also, dental implants come in multiple colours between white and yellow, so finding a natural looking tooth is never a problem.
How long does a dental implant last?
95% of tooth implants are successful. Dental implants are safe as well. They are strong too, so they will last a lifetime. They are even stronger then natural teeth, because they are protected against infections.
But remember they can still be chipped by injuries, like any normal tooth – they are not ever lasting!
