There are many different types of dental floss. And although there may seem like too many choices, choosing the correct dental floss does not have to be difficult.
Dental floss keeps your teeth and gums healthy. And although different people use dental floss for different reasons, it is very important to know that the best floss for you is one that you can use every day.
Did you know that a recent study in the Journal of Periodontology actually showed there wasn’t any difference in the effectiveness of four different flossing products.
They gave 25 people four different products – a woven floss, a waxed floss, an electric dental flossing device and a shred-resistant floss. Every one of these floss products showed a much higher plaque removal compared with just brushing by itself. The best one out of the four was the electric flosser. It showed the most amount of reduced plaque after a single use.
Believe it or not, past research has shown that the electric flosser is just as safe a tool to use as regular floss. But is it wise to choose an electric flosser instead of one of the many types of standard floss?
It’s important to remember that older people who have trouble with handling floss with their fingers may benefit the most, with an electric flosser. In addition, many older children and teenagers prefer to use electric flossers simply because they find them more fun to use.
But the different members of your family may prefer different types of floss products. These needs and preferences will vary over time. Children may start off with a children’s electric flosser. As they grow older they may change to a spongy floss which works around braces etc.
If you’re uncertain about the specific type of floss which is best for you, then here are some helpful points:
- If you have large gaps between your teeth then you should use dental tape.
- On the other hand, if your teeth are very tightly spaced you may prefer to use a waxed floss to get in between the tighter spaces.
- If you prefer a cleaner flossing device, look for a disposable flosser.
- If you have braces or any other dental appliance, you may prefer to use a spongy floss, or just regular floss with a floss threader.
Keep in mind that when it comes to dental floss, you need to floss every day. It is often overlooked but regular flossing is one of the most important decisions you can make to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
